How to use it

  1. Face to face: open Laam on your phone and hold it between you. On a phone call: put the call on speaker and open Laam on a second device (a laptop or tablet) next to it. Skip headphones, because Laam has to hear the other person.
  2. Tap Speak English, say your line, then pause. Laam shows the Thai and says it out loud.
  3. When they answer, tap พูดภาษาไทย. Laam shows their words in English and reads them out. Turn on Hands-free and it switches sides for you after every line.
Tap a button and speak. Pause when you finish and Laam translates.

Gives the most natural Thai. Create a key at console.anthropic.com. It stays in this browser and is sent only to Anthropic.

When you speak Thai, end sentences with

Thai speakers add this politeness word to most sentences. Claude follows this setting; the free engines guess.

How long Laam waits after you stop talking. Raise it if it cuts you off mid-sentence.

Cloned voices

Laam can read each translation in a copy of the speaker's real voice, made by ElevenLabs. Each voice needs 1–2 minutes of clear speech and that person's permission.

Needs a paid ElevenLabs plan with Instant Voice Cloning. Create a key at elevenlabs.io. It stays in this browser and is sent only to ElevenLabs.

How to get a voice that sounds like the person
  • Record 1–2 minutes in a quiet room without echo, holding the phone about a hand's width from your mouth.
  • Talk the way you do on calls. The copy repeats your pace, tone and any background noise.
  • For the other person, voice messages they sent you work much better than recording them through a phone speaker.
  • A copied voice sounds most like the person in the language they recorded in. In the other language the accent changes, so compare with the two Hear it buttons.
  • For the closest match, make a Professional Voice Clone on elevenlabs.io (about 30 minutes of audio), then choose it with "Use a voice from my ElevenLabs account".

I agree to have my voice copied so my words can be spoken in Thai. Today I'm trying out a voice interpreter, and I'm going to read for about a minute and a half so it can learn how I sound. I'd like to book a table for four people at seven o'clock tonight, somewhere near the river if possible. Could you tell me how far the hotel is from the train station, and whether it's easier to take a taxi or walk? Last year I spent two weeks travelling around the north, and the food was the best part. I still think about the noodle soup I had at a small market in Chiang Mai. My flight lands on Thursday afternoon, so I'll probably be tired, but I'd love to meet for dinner on Friday. On a phone call they can't see this text. Voice messages they sent you (LINE, WhatsApp) work much better than recording them through a phone speaker: upload one or several, 1–2 minutes in total.

Only copy a voice with that person's permission. Deleting a voice here also removes it from your ElevenLabs account.
